It's Hot!

We decided,  or rather I decided to venture out today to one of the must see sights around Lisbon, Belem. John could care less about touristy meccas. i.e. crowded hot places. I should have taken his tact today since the temperature was up around the 100 degree mark. Made our way to the Praca do Comercio center, an expansive square on the river Tagus, where we waited too long for the trolley #15. One, jam packed, just trolleyed on by us.  What the....?

Ended up getting on a tram instead of the popular trolley.  There are multiple modes of transport, all of which our cards allow us access.  Finally reached Belem and OMGEE are there a LOT of tourists! It happens to be the first Sunday of the month so all museums are free! Great right? Uh, yeah...... The Monastery of Jeronimos was a must see on my list and that was about all we could muster before practically succumbing to heat stroke.  How will we walk in this on Tuesday?
This place is astounding!  King Manuel erected this humongous place in the late 1400s as  thanks for the discoveries made by Portuguese explorers.
King Manuel has his tomb here along with the great explorer Vasco da Gama. The report I wrote about him back in school is still with me unbelievably! We were able to tour the cloister which normally costs 16 euro each but free today,  so all was not lost.

We had a nice dinner of lobster and shrimp at the Peixaria de Esquina, the fish shop on the corner. A bit pricey by Lisbon standards but we wanted to blow it out before beginning our walk.  It was a delicious meal with a great Duro Tinto wine.   We will do some shopping for needed items tomorrow and basically take a day off from sightseeing to rest up for our trek. Plus it's going to be around 100 degrees. I am appreciating this air conditioning for now. We may not have it down the line depending on accommodations. Oh boy....... here we go. Onward pilgrims.  610 kilometers to Santiago Spain.

  1. Sounds way to hot for us. Hoping it cools off by October 10th when we will be there. Hope you get some respite for the start of your walk.
